The Botanical Garden of Kefalonia was created in 1998 on the initiative of the Fokas-Kosmetatos Foundation, aiming at the promotion of the plants of the Ionian Sea and the promotion of environmental concerns. It is located on the outskirts of Argostoli and covers 14 of the 28 hectares of the total area of the estate.
The initial intervention on the site was limited to the enhancement of the existing vegetation by removing dead branches, weeds, etc., adding paths and creating a stream. This was followed by the planting of herbs in a specific area and enrichment with other Mediterranean native plants. Our ultimate goal and ambition was for this collection of Mediterranean plants to educate, conserve and at the same time nourish. In 2008, a small artificial pond of 500 m2 was created and planted with Mediterranean aquatic plants and serves as a water reservoir in case of fire.
The BCC is gradually being enriched with more species so that there is scientific work at the same time. There is now an Erbarium and a Seed Bank for the protection of endemic and endangered plants.
