Cephalonia Botanica was established in 1998 through the initiative of the Focas-Cosmetatos Foundation, with the aim of protecting and promoting the plants of the Ionian Islands. It is located on the outskirts of Argostoli and covers 14 of the 28 acres of the total estate.

The initial intervention in the area focused on enhancing the existing vegetation after a light cleaning, adding pathways, and creating a small stream. This was followed by the planting of herbs in a designated area and the enrichment of the Garden with other plant species. Our ultimate goal and ambition was for this collection of plants to educate and simultaneously provide enjoyment. In 2008, a small artificial pond of 500 cubic meters was created and planted with Mediterranean aquatic plants. This also functions as a water reservoir in case of fire. Additionally, a small outdoor theater was built to host cultural events.

Gradually, the Botanical Garden of Kefalonia was enriched with endemic and rare species that need protection. The Garden also maintains an Herbarium and a Seed Bank of Endemic & Rare Species, making it an important center for the conservation and protection of plant species and an official member of the global network of Botanical Gardens BGCI (Botanical Gardens Conservation International).

Finally, our decision to avoid the use of herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers has turned the Garden into a small sanctuary for biodiversity.
